I am Chandni, 16 years old, currently studying in 12th grade. There are four people in my family. My mom and dad go to Delhi for work. We have three sisters and one brother living at home.
When I was in 11th grade, I got my first period and became very nervous. I was scared after seeing the bleeding and started feeling slight pain. I did not tell anyone.
I felt very scared and wondered whom I should tell and what I should say. As a result, my school results suffered. I started feeling irritable.
One day, Vandana didi started discussing menstrual hygiene and health in the Balika Panchayat. I thought this was a good opportunity to tell her about my problem.
I waited until everyone had left and then talked to Vandana didi. She said there is nothing to be ashamed of; it is a natural body process that happens to all girls and women.
She gave me all the information about what to keep in mind during menstruation, how to maintain cleanliness, and how to avoid mental stress.
She told me that if I have any problems during menstruation, I should not hide it and should talk openly. She explained everything to me.
Now, I don’t hesitate when I have my periods. I also tell other girls to take care of their hygiene during their periods. There is no need to feel shy or hesitant about having periods.
