Safe Migration and Labour Protection

There are more than 1 lakh migrant workers in Tikamgarh district of Bundelkhand who are forced to migrate due to lack of livelihood opportunities at home. Poor working conditions, long working hours, lack of water, sanitation or safety equipment and forced labour are perennial problems faced by migrant workers and their families.

For the last 15 years, Grameen Swavlamban Sanstha has been working intensively with more than 50 thousand migrant communities in Tikamgarh district to ensure their social security and safe migration. The PR-3 model of Grameen Swavalamban Sanstha ensures reduction in prevalence of forced labour situations by ensuring prevention (raising awareness within communities and ensuring access to social protection schemes) response (technology-based tracking of migrant workers and immediate case-based support) and rehabilitation (connection). for welfare measures) and system reforms (working with government departments and private bodies for large-scale policy and practice reforms). In 2020, we initiated the formation of the Migrants Resilience Collaborative (MRC), a grassroots-led multi-stakeholder collaborative of non-profit, philanthropic and private sector actors focused on ensuring safety, security and mobility for vulnerable migrant families across Tikamgarh district. In the next 3 years, MRC aims to enable equitable recovery of 1 lakh workers and their families in the district. Prevention of violence against women and children (PVAWC)

More than three women are raped every hour in India. Police recorded 31,677 cases of rape in 2021 – an average of 86 per day and an average of 49 per day. Of the total 31,677 rape cases, 28,147 (about 89%) were anonymous rape cases. The national conviction rate in rape cases is 37%, which means 2 out of 3 rape victims will not get justice. For the last two decades, Grameen Swavlamban Organization has believed that fundamental change can happen only when prevention, response and rehabilitation are tackled together through a holistic approach. It is important to work together with men and boys to achieve behavior change and act as a structural driver for the prevention of violence against women and girls (VAW&G). Till date Grameen Swavlamban Organization has worked with approximately 875735 women and girls across all program areas. We are supporting 933 survivors of sexual violence and have prevented 2841 young girls from becoming victims of caste-based commercial sexual exploitation of children. Over the next 5 years, we will work to reduce the prevalence of sexual violence against women by 25% and empower 10,000 victims in Tikamgarh district of Bundelkhand through direct support and collaboration.

PR3 model

Grameen Swavlamban Organization has been actively involved in combating various forms of violence against women and girls in Tikamgarh district of Bundelkhand for the last 20 years. Our approach involves a comprehensive combination of strategies that strive to create change at the individual, community and systemic levels. Our PR3 model (which focuses on prevention, response, rehabilitation and systems reform) is a holistic framework that guides our efforts towards ending sexual violence.

Prevention

Our organization’s efforts towards prevention are focused on empowering women and girls with the knowledge and skills needed to resist all forms of violence and discrimination. We focus on promoting awareness of important issues such as bodily autonomy, constitutional rights, gender-based violence and leadership development through community and individual level initiatives. Our preventive measures also include collaborating with men and boys as well as community and faith leaders, district officials and other stakeholders.

Response

Grameen Swavlamban Organization strives to overcome the shortcomings in the legal system by strengthening existing structures and providing comprehensive legal, medical, psychological, emergency and social assistance to survivors. Our team of lawyers provides pro bono services to survivors, assisting them in filing complaints, opposing bail, obtaining compensation and representing them in court and before commissions.

Rehabilitation

Our organization takes a multi-pronged approach to facilitate the recovery and reintegration of survivors and their families into society. We accomplish this by providing educational support as well as enrolling them in vocational and skill-building courses. Professional counselors provide psychological therapy to survivors, helping them develop resilience to the trauma and stress caused by the violence they experienced.

Reform in system

To effect policy-level changes, our organization forms strategic collaborations and partnerships with various stakeholders. We engage with state authorities such as police, One Stop Center members, child welfare committees, juvenile justice boards, shelter homes, lawyers and judges to ensure responsibility and accountability when dealing with survivors of sexual violence. By doing so, we aim to hold these stakeholders accountable and encourage them to actively participate in bringing about meaningful change in the system.
