A woman migrant labourer got support to work as farmer in own land for the first time

This is the case study of Smt. Rukmani Bai, she lives in Dargah Khurd Village of Block- Mohangarh (Tikamgarh). Her village has a population of 2250 people, where the majority of the population belongs to the Upper Caste community. The Majority upper caste population has ownership of land for their life but people from SC/ST community either migrate to other cities like Delhi to work as daily wage labourers or work in the land of upper caste people in their village. In particular, this village which is nearby the border of Uttar Pradesh state, makes it more isolated from district offices and their schemes.

Rukmani says that she also has land and people in her village who have land get money for farming but she has never got anything and neither she has any facilities to do farming. Therefore, for a long time she has been migrating to Delhi with her husband and children to work as a daily wage labourer. But during nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic, she was forced to come back and she also didn’t get paid for the past five days of working from the contractor. During the tough time of lockdown, she borrowed some money and came back to her home but as there is no work at home, she and her family were anyhow managing their daily life with the borrowed money.

During the intervention of Jan Saathiprogramme in Dargah Khurd village, one Jan Saathi met her and she told about her recent experiences and conditions. Thereafter, Jan saathi explained to her about Kishaan Samaan Nidhi Yojana and its benefits. But later they got to know that she doesn’t have a bank account also to be eligible to get benefits of the scheme. Later, with support of Jan Saathi, her account was opened in Bank of Baroda and after which Jan Saathi also supported her to apply for Kishaan Samaan Nidhi Yojana. She also got her first loan of rupees 2,000 through a scheme to do cultivation and farming in her land. Now, she says that they will start cultivation in her own land and it will help her a lot in this situation.
